Monfredo: Worceser, Next Tuesday, Go Out and Vote

Sunday, November 01, 2015

Next Tuesday you have the opportunity to vote in a local election in Worcester. This local election gives voters a say in who will represent them in important decisions affecting their city and their school system. Positions in the Mayor’s race, City Council and School Committee are essential to a strong city.   The hiring of a new superintendent and  the safety of a city are impacted in local elections.

As a school committee member I applaud all those candidates who are running in this local election for they have had to work hard to get their name on the ballot and have become fair game for social media abusers.  They have given their time freely to articulate  positions on issue affecting our city and deserve the voters of Worcester to come out and cast their votes.

It’s important that the voter look at the record of those who are running and make intelligent decisions based on who will lead our city during the next two years.   Issues such as the tax rate, dealing with gang violence, economic redevelopment, addressing neighborhood problems are all part of the city council’s job.
On the school committee side there will be the search for a new school superintendent, new school construction, dealing with the achievement gap,  strategies in getting our students to  read on grade level, graduation and drop-out rates, school safety and so much more.

Voters need to be informed, ask questions of the candidates and base their vote not on one issue but on what the person brings to the community.  These positions will shape the quality of life and the future direction of Worcester.

Please remember that voting is an important right in this country and by voting you are making your voice heard in this city.  Remember voting is not a requirement but it is a RESPONSIBILITY and an obligation of being a good citizen. As Americans we have the right to vote and remember voting is a sign that you believe in your democracy and that you believe in the power of its citizens.   In all elections we have a say in who will represent us in important decisions that affect this city and this country.  Don’t waste the opportunity, go out and vote on Tuesday, November 3rd. The polls open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m.
