NEW: Police Department Hosts Youth Summit

Thursday, May 17, 2012

Students of all ages had the chance to speak with representatives from local organizations about activities, summer jobs and internships.

The Worcester Police Department held its 8th Annual Youth Summit last night at North High School.

The event ran from 5 to 8:30 pm, and was designed to help students from all grade levels find community resources such as summer camps, youth groups, social and educational services, and internships. Students were able to browse booths of these different opportunities and ask questions.

“My friend told me about this event,” Ymari Pyatt, a junior at Abby Kelley Foster Charter said. "She said we could speak with a bunch of different organizations, so I came here because I thought that sounded cool."

Started by Police Chief Gary Gemme in 2005, the Summit aims to get teens off the streets and away from crime and drugs. Gemme began the event after seeing an uptick in youth violence. Youth serving agencies from across Worcester gathered and set up, expo-style, to present information and recruit students.

Hundreds of students attended the event with the hope of finding a good fit.

“I want to go to every table, because I have nothing to do this summer,” Pyatt said. "I've liked all the people I've talked to, and I found one that will allow me to volunteer with young kids in Worcester. It's cool because I like to be involved."
