Recreation Worcester and Summer Youth Corp to Kick-Off on Tuesday

Monday, June 08, 2015

On Tuesday, City Manager Ed Augustus, Mayor Joe Petty and Worcester's community partners will kick-off two new summer youth programs: Recreaton Worcester and the Summer Youth Corp jobs program.

“Young people are 20 percent of our population, but they are 100 percent of our future. These programs will ensure youths across Worcester have safe, supervised, free places to play and vital employment opportunities this summer,” said Augustus.

Recreation Worcester is a free summer program for kids ages 7-13 that includes swim safety classes, and instructional activties at 10 of Worcester's parks. Recreation Worcester takes the place of the former city summer program Wheels to Water & Beyond.

“Recreation Worcester is hoping to get more kids into our parks and keep them active. This program keeps our City’s children healthy, safe, and learning during the summer months,” said Petty. “The Summer Youth Corp is looking to do the same for our young adults. I look forward to watching City employees work side by side with Worcester’s young adults as they gain the professional experience they need to move forward in life.”

June 29 will start the program off with a four-day "Swim Week" at various sites across the city including the Boys & Girls Club, Girls Incorporated, the Jewish Community Center, YMCA Central Branch, YMCA Shore Park, and the YWCA.

The Summer Youth Corp program is geared towards city youth that want to gain work experience in city government. Participants will work 20 hours per week for six weeks in departments such as the Division of Public Health, Division of Inspectional Services, Worcester Public Library, Human Resources and Economic Development.

Tuesday's kick-off event will be held at 3:30 PM at Crompton Park in Worcester. More details about the programs will be announced during the kick-off event, and will be available on the city’s website, worcesterma.gov.
