Worcester Police Make Up Nearly 70% of Worcester’s Highest Paid Employees

Over 2014, the 170 members of the Worcester Police Department in the top 250 highest wage earners in the city received more than $2.6 million in overtime pay.

Police Chief Gary Gemme, who earned $201,569, has the second highest salary in the city only behind City Manager Ed Augustus.
Gemme is followed by Deputy Chief Mark Roche, who grossed $194,944.
Worcester Public Schools Superintendent Melinda Boone was the fourth highest-paid city employee, with gross pay of $194,826 in 2014.
A list of 15 Worcester police officers, lieutenants, sergeants and captain follow Boone as the highest wage earners.
Non-police personnel earners that are in the top 50 in the city were Worcester Fire Chief Gerard Dio who came in 20th with $168,609, Worcester Public Schools Coordinator of the Alternative School Michael O’Neil in 38th with $158,590, Worcester Public Schools Chief Financial and Operations Officer Brian Allen in 45th with $155,102 and Assistant City Manager Kathleen Johnston in 49th earning $154,601.

Overtime and Paid Details Give Police Officers Pay Boost
Of the 170 highest paid police officers, the city paid out roughly $5 million in paid details. Like Kelly, many police personnel earned at least an additional 50% of their regular annual salary.
The 50th highest paid city employee was a Police Lieutenant that earned $154,932, of which more than $43,000 was acquired due to police details.
The difference between regular pay and gross pay for the City's police personnel is the combination of overtime and paid detail. For detail assignments, Worcester pays the paid detail amount from the companies that hire the details.
