The Grouch Goes Goya – Tom Finneran

Saturday, July 25, 2020

Tom Finneran is the former Speaker of the House in MA

You remember my friend the Grouch.

He’s happy in his cave, largely withdrawn from the multiplying idiocies of our age.

Every once in a while the Grouch emerges to provide a pearl or two of commentary, usually derisive of the lecturing class ensconced at Harvard and the Boston Globe.

The Grouch emerged for a moment last week. His topic? The Goya boycott.

I suspect that you’ve heard of your moral duty and obligation to denounce Goya and to boycott its products. The nation’s permanent protesters and advocates, relentlessly hunting any indication of political incorrectness, took umbrage with the CEO of Goya. His sin, you ask? He went to the White House and spoke courteously, and of course you know who lives there now……………

With some sarcasm, the Grouch points out that the Goya boss has been at the White House before, when Barack and Michelle were in residence. The Grouch recalls no controversy to the Goya CEO’s presence at that time. The Grouch smirks at the differing public reactions.

As the Grouch considers the ongoing re-education of America and the self-loathing of the nation’s so-called elite, he recommends a book which is not for the faint of heart: Life and Death in Shanghai by Nien Cheng. The Grouch has a well-thumbed copy and he reminds his friends that Chairman and Madam Mao, two of history’s cruelest murderers, were lionized by many of the American intelligentsia, the very same folks who admired Lenin and Stalin and the stultifying oppression of acceptable thought. The Grouch thinks for himself, which makes him a clear and present danger to the Republic.

The Grouch makes three points on the shifting moods and “truths” of our day:

- The Goya CEO, whose name is Robert Unanue, is a third-generation immigrant; his grandparents started and ran a small Spanish/ Caribbean grocery store and the next two generations of the family grew the business to an impressive success; it sounds like a stunning yet typical American story, providing specialty foods and economic opportunity to a growing Spanish population; it also sounds like an only-in-America achievement;

- By all accounts, Mr. Unanue and Goya are generous supporters of various food pantries and community-hunger programs; their support comes in both financial and foodstuff form; not surprisingly, the Grouch is familiar with a local food pantry, as both a beneficiary and a volunteer, and he thinks that donors such as Mr. Unanue set a good and moral example; the Grouch shares the example of Mr. Unanue’s assistance to Michelle Obama’s healthy eating initiatives and he thinks that his generosity is a consistent and prominent feature of his character; he also thinks that a person’s good character is not dependent upon whomever is in occupancy of the White House; what a revolutionary thought;

- Mr. Unanue was invited to the White House to express his support for the Hispanic Prosperity Initiative, a program designed to expand and improve Hispanic American access to educational and economic opportunities; apparently he spoke courteously and respectfully of the President, which is now considered a hate crime against humanity; the Grouch points out that respect and courtesy were once considered essential elements of a civil and tolerant society; he wonders what happened and he wonders what lies ahead; with a clear eye he notes the seething anger of the self-proclaimed tolerant class and their intolerable behavior.

The Grouch of course has the last laugh on the thought police. He’s a man of very modest means, living simply on peanut butter sandwiches and Italian subs. But last week he went into full resistance mode---he went out and bought a dozen cans of Goya beans. So much for the boycott………..

The Grouch is boycotting the boycott! Why am I not surprised?
