NEW: Bill Clinton to Campaign with Markey in Worcester on Saturday

Wednesday, June 12, 2013

Former President Bill Clinton will be in Worcester on Saturday to campaign for Senate candidate and US Rep. Ed Markey, according to sources. He will be joined by Senator Elizabeth Warren and fellow US Rep. James McGovern. More details on specific events to come soon.

Democrat Ed Markey is currently locked in a hotly contested Senate race with Republican Gabriel Gomez for the seat vacated by former Senator John Kerry. This announcement follows on the heels of President Obama's own appearance on behalf of Markey on Wednesday in Boston and a passionate debate between the two candidates in Springfield on Tuesday night. Democrats are trying to avoid a repeat of 2010, when Republican Scott Brown upset Martha Coakley in a Senate special election.

"Bill Clinton is still one of the most popular Presidents we've had. He is well loved in Massachusetts and his appearance will certainly help Ed Markey close the deal with the voters of Massachusetts," says Paul Giorgio, a member of the Democratic State Committee.

Polls have tightened in recent days and weeks, though Markey still has the clear advantage.

The special election is scheduled for June 25th.
