Urban Gardener: Composting For Winter

Streetlights illuminate my city garden. I often walk the grassy lanes and lose myself among the living breathing and ever active garden. The recent full moon and Venus are bright enough to shine through the urban haze. Gardeners are ever mindful that gardening is an endless generative act. We are in harmony with seasonal changes. There are always interesting natural phenomena or opportunity at hand. For me, it’s a gigantic heap of leaves cresting the driveway between house and garden wall well over my head. This glacial force is fragrant from months of sunny warm days. Soon, it will flow into the garden spaces transformed and shredded to form a thick layer of organic material on top of the already manured garden spaces. Or maybe the compost heap!

On Monday, Leominster High School postponed their Tuesday pep rally for their Thanksgiving Day Football game due to a shooting threat. Two students reported to administration that a Leominster High student threatened to shoot up the pep rally.

The shooting scare is one of many recent threats to local high schools.  Since December, in Central Massachusetts there have been a reported seven high schools evacuated because of bomb threats.

5K Road Race to Honor St. Peter- Marian’s Kevin Kirk

On Saturday, St.Peter-Marian High School will host it's First Annual Kevin Kirk 5K Memorial Road Race in memory of former teacher Kevin Kirk. A teacher at SPM for 38 years, Kirk passed away in June after a long and courageous battle with cancer. At SPM, Kirk taught English and coached Cross Country.

Leave it to the most important national holiday of the year to interrupt an uncivilized shopping spree of door-busters and markdowns. How selfish of Thanksgiving to gather family and friends. We could be out there spending money on those loved ones, but no, we have to eat dinner with them first.

The notorious 'Black Friday' has suddenly become a three-day long shopping event where Worcester locals try to get their Christmas shopping done and over with during a holiday so they can spend more time with their friends and family over the holidays.
