HURRICANE UPDATE MONDAY AFTERNOON: Height of Storm Just Hours Away

Hurricane Sandy is intensifying and accelerating toward the New Jersey coastline. As of Noon, this massive storm was located about 300 miles south of Providence and was moving north-northwest at 18 mph. At that pace it will slam into Southern New Jersey later this evening. From that point it will weaken, slow down and meander into Pennsylvania and by later Tuesday will turn northward into upstate New York.

Ideal astronomical circumstances were forecast for the annual Orionid meteor shower peak between midnight and dawn on the morning of October 21. The waxing Moon set before midnight, so it would not interfere by bathing the sky in bright moonlight. These conditions would allow casual stargazers to observe about 20 yellow and green shooting stars per hour under cloud-free skies.
