A Big Series in New York Which May Not Matter

Friday, August 06, 2010

Did you ever get the feeling that it just wasn’t meant to be?  That’s how Red Sox Nation is feeling right about now.

In a season full of injuries, Boston may have suffered its most damaging blow this week when Kevin Youkilis went on the DL with an injured thumb.  Yesterday we learned that he will need surgery on that thumb and will be out for the remainder of the season.

To say that this news is disappointing is an understatement and it could not have come at a worse time with the Sox set to open up a 4-game series in New York tonight against the division-leading Yankees.

Through all of the injuries, this team has managed to hang around in both the division and wild card races.  And while they are still technically very much alive at 5 ½  games out of a playoff spot with 53 games to play, realistically they are facing a difficult uphill climb.

If the Sox were to sweep four in New York this weekend, all of New England would come alive.  But does anyone really think that this is a possibility?

Three of the four pitching match-up’s favor the Sox as Boston’s top four starters will take the mound at Yankee Stadium.  Clay Buchholz faces Javier Vazquez tonight.  Saturday it will be John Lackey up against CC Sabathia.  Sunday night Josh Beckett squares off against the struggling AJ Burnett.  And Jon Lester takes the hill in Monday’s series finale against Dustin Moseley.

Still, with Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis unable to play, the heart of the Boston offense will be absent in this big series.

It’s not as if this year’s Red Sox team hasn’t surprised us before like they did with their sizzling hot stretch from late May through the month of June.  You just get the feeling that they have maxed out what they can do with this team give the number of injuries they have had and continue to have to key players.
