Cordischi’s NFL News & Notes: Preseason

Tuesday, August 03, 2010

Over 17,000 Patriots fans attended training camp n Foxboro Sunday to see the return of WR Wes Welker.  Just 7 months after tearing his ACL in Houston, Welker returned to practice after being taken off the physically unable to perform list.

Once it would take anywhere from 12-24 months to return from such an injury.  Now, thanks to the marvels of modern medicine and the dedication and work ethic of great athletes like Welker, players are returning much sooner from these types of injuries.

Needless to say, Welker received huge ovations from the crowds on hand at Gillette Stadium yesterday.  While he did not participate in any contact drills, Welker did run full speed in other drills.  Expect to see him suit up for opening day against the Cincinnati Bengals.

In other football news:

-The Pats reportedly had DE Adewale Ogunleye in for a workout on Sunday.  Ogunleye has been a defensive end in a “4-3” scheme playing with his hand on the ground in Chicago.  The 9-year veteran would most likely be asked to play outside linebacker in the Pats “3-4” scheme should they sign him.

-Things aren’t getting off to a great start for the Jets – a trendy pick to win the AFC in 2010.  Cornerback Darrelle Revis is a hold out unhappy with his current contract.  For my money, Revis is not only the best corner in the league, but arguably the best defensive player in the NFL.  For that reason, I don’t think that the Jets will let this situation go unresolved for too much longer.

-Former Syracuse WR Mike Williams is impressing his coaches down in Tampa.  Williams was a bit of a problem child in college where he quit the team and he apparently didn’t impress a lot of NFL teams in his interview sessions at the combine.  Still, the young man is very talented and if he can keep his head screwed on straight, he could find himself as a starting receiver for the Bucs in his rookie year.

-A scare in Denver  where running backs Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter left practice with leg injuries.  Moreno’s was thought to be the more serious of the two injuries with fear that he may have torn his hamstring.  Reports out of Denver say that an MRI revealed no tear in the hamstring which is good news for the Broncos.

-In Minnesota, the Brett Favre watch is on.  However, it’s not really a question of “if,” it’s more like “when” will the star quarterback join the team?  According to Fox 9 in Minnesota, August 28thagainst Seattle may be the date.  Stay tuned!

-While Darrelle Revis holds out in New York, Reggie Wayne and Robert Mathis have shown up to Colts camp despite wanting new deals.  Apparently Wayne and Mathis have chosen to follow the Tom Brady path and not let their individual concerns effect the team.  Good for them!
