Rams snag big win road

Thursday, February 24, 2011

An improbable rally on the road has put Rhode Island in position to crack the top four in the Atlantic 10 with postseason play looming on the horizon.

Marquis Jones’ lay-up with nine seconds remaining Wednesay capped a late rally and lifted the Rams to a 77-76 win over Duquesne at the A.J. Palumbo Center. Rhode Island (17-10 overall, 8-5 A-10) scored the final six points of the game and held the struggling Dukes (17-9, 9-4 A-10) scoreless over the final three minutes, 15 seconds.

Duquesne has now lost four of its last five games while the Rams pulled to within a game of the Dukes for sole possession of fourth place in the A-10. The top four teams in the conference tournament receive first-round byes. The Rams have three regular-season games remaining – two on the road – including Saturday’s showdown at Fordham; the Fordham Rams have only won seven games this year and are 0-12 in conference play.

Wednesday’s rally began with a lay-up by Will Martell following an offensive rebound and ended in similar fashion when Jones scooped up the loose ball off a blocked shot by Duquesne’s B.J. Monteiro and scored with nine seconds remaining to put Rhode Island ahead, 77-76.

Nikola Malesevic blocked T.J. McConnell’s game-winning attempt on the ensuing possession, but also missed two free throws with one second remaining. The Dukes couldn’t capitalize off the misses, allowing Rhode Island to escape with arguably its biggest win of the season.

Malesevic led the Rams with 16 points while Jones, Delroy James and Jamal Wilson finished with 14 points apiece. Sean Johnson led the Dukes with 18 points. Duquesne closes the regular season against Saint Louis, St. Bonaventure and Richmond.
