Scott Cordischi On Sports: What’s the Truth About the Pats?

Wednesday, September 22, 2010

It never ceases to amaze me how sports fans overreact to the moment. After the Patriots week one win over Cincinnati, all of New England had the team finishing 12-4 at worst and winning the AFC East. However, after Sunday’s loss to the Jets, it’s Armageddon. Belichick is an idiot, Brady’s a bum, this team stinks, we have heard it all.

A wise man from Fall River by the name of Kenneth James Aloysius Ford (a.k.a. Jersey Red) once said, “somewhere in the middle lies the truth.” Translation: while we ride the roller coaster this NFL season and experience all of the highs and lows it has to offer, remember that it’s never quite as good or bad as you actually think it is.

-Having said that, score one for the big, fat loudmouth in New Jersey.

-Is there anything more boring than a professional baseball team playing out the string in September?

-For the first time in quite a few years there is actually some anticipation for the upcoming Bruins season.

-Do people actually think that Bill Belichick took stupid pills and has now become a horrible coach?

-There was once a time when Tom Brady used to claim that his favorite receiver was the open receiver. That didn’t appear to be the case Sunday at the Meadowlands.

-But, despite his greatness, Brady is entitled to have a bad game every once in a while.

-What keeps me up at night is Brady’s lack of in-game vocal leadership. He should watch tape of himself on the sidelines in 2009 and this season and compare it to film of him on the sidelines during games earlier in his career. He will be startled at the difference.

-The Boston Celtics are coming back to Newport for the third straight year. They will hold training camp at Salve Regina in preparation for the upcoming season.

-Thanks to the Journal’s Bill Reynolds for the shout out in his column Saturday. He’s a great writer and person and his Saturday column was the inspiration behind this weekly column.

-Do we really have to root for the 1-1 Jets to beat the 2-0 Dolphins this Sunday night?

-PC fans will be happy to know that Abdul Abdullah is coaching college basketball in Rhode Island joining Jesse Agel’s staff at Brown University.

-All you need to know about the Patriots is that they simply aren’t as talented as they were a few years ago.

-I’ll still take Belichick and Brady over any other coach and quarterback combo in the league. Okay, maybe Sean Payton and Drew Brees would make me think twice.

-I hate to place the bar too high to start, but I can’t wait to see B’s rookie Tyler Seguin in action this season.

-Former URI coach Jerry DeGregorio helps college kids who are NBA prospects prepare for their individual workouts with teams, in case you were wondering.

-And shame on me for not noticing a few months ago but late condolences go out to DeGregorio’s former boss Jim Harrick who lost his wife Sally earlier this year.

-Just when I was starting to feel bad for Tom Brady after Sunday’s loss, I remembered that his wife is a super model and that he just signed a new 72 million dollar contract.

-Joe Torre going back to New York for the unveiling of George Steinbrenner’s monument Monday night was simply confirmation of the class he possesses.

-It’s hard to believe that the San Diego Padres may actually not make the playoffs this year given the way they played most of the season.

-Brown football fans have anxiously been awaiting Saturday’s first-ever night home game in the 133-year history of the program. It kicks off with Harvard Saturday night at 6pm at Brown Stadium.
