Sox Sucking Us In? / Yankee Fans Should Be Concerned

Saturday, August 28, 2010

They’re at it again!  Just when you thought it was safe to put the baseball season to rest and look forward to the 2010 NFL season for the Patriots, the Red Sox are trying to suck us back in.

Last night’s 3-1 win in Tampa coupled with the Yankees loss to the White Sox has Boston 4 ½  games out in both the division and wild card races.  What happens today and tomorrow between Boston and Tampa along with the Yankees in Chicago could make a meaningless September meaningful for Red Sox Nation after all.

Call me a naysayer, a pessimist, or whatever you want to call me.  I still think that Boston will come up short of the playoffs in the end.  But they make make the month of September interesting for us.

Meanwhile, my colleague Michael Parente (a.k.a. the insufferable Yankee fan) ought to stop worrying about the apathy amongst Red Sox fans and start focusing his concerns on his beloved New York Yankees.

A.J. Burnett turned in another stellar performance last night giving up 8 hits, 9 runs and 3 walks in just 3 1/3  innings of work against the White Sox.  Burnett is now 9-12 with an ERA of 5.17.  His performance this year makes the John Lackey signing look like the bargain of the century!

Javier Vazquez has also been Porky Pig in spikes this year with a 9-9 mark and a 4.96 ERA.  Phil Hughes is 15-6 but has gotten progressively worse each month of the season.  After a terrific start to the season in April and May, he has posted ERA’s of 5.17, 5.22 and 4.33 in the months of June, July and August.

Andy Pettitte was superb before a groin injury sent him to the DL.  He hasn’t pitched since mid July.

So right now, it’s C.C. Sabathia and pray for four days of rain if you’re a Yankee fan.

The good news for Parente and all Yankee fans is that they built what appears to be a big enough lead to hold off a team like Boston for a playoff spot.  But they had better hope that Pettitte gets healthy and some other pitchers come around before October or it could be a short postseason for the men in pinstripes.
