Worcester Hydra’s Offense Beginning to Come Together

Tuesday, June 19, 2012

Midfielder Colin Murphy

After struggling to find the net early this season, the Hydra FC offense has come alive the past two games.

The Hydra (3-2-3) are coming off a hard fought 2-2 tie against the division leading Ottawa Fury. It marks the second consecutive game that the Hydra have scored multiple goals, after scoring just three goals in the previous four games.

"You know, it's just a matter of the guys getting used to playing with each other," Comrie said. "It's tough because they all have other jobs, and they're very busy during the week. But I think they are just now starting to get a feel for each other offensively, and they've bought into our system on both sides of the ball."

The Hydra currently sit in 5th place in the Northeast Division of the PDL with 12 points. Worcester is only one point out of third place, and has played fewer games than all teams ahead of it except for GPS Portland. The Hydra are also coming off a significant win over third place CFC Azul that saw star Alencar Junior return from a Red Card to score his fifth goal of the year, and Derek McCaffrey score the game winner in the 70th minute.

The star of Sunday's game, however, was Boston University product Michael Bustamente. The talented midfielder scored a goal and added an assist in the 2-2 tie.

"Michael Bustamente has really stepped up for us," Comrie said. "He's a player that we knew had talent, but he's coming off a knee injury from last year, so he hasn't gotten into match shape yet. We're working him back into it slowly, but he's starting to come into his own and we're hoping he can blossom into the player we know he can be."

Comrie has said that the month of June will decide his team's fate this season. He obviously feel pretty good Worcester's start to the month, and credits the players for coming together and becoming a cohesive unit so quickly.

"It's really a credit to the guys," Comrie said. "They've adapted, and we're fortunate to be were we are. But, to be honest, I don't think we should have lost a game yet. The only game I wasn't happy with was against Portland, and that was because we were starting six new guys. So, we're happy with where we are, and we're happy with where we are headed."

The Hydra take the pitch next tomorrow at 7:30 pm for a road game against Western Mass. They will return to Worcester Sunday for a 7 pm game against CFC Azul at Foley Stadium.
