Hair Removal Made Easy (and Painless)

Friday, January 28, 2011

Sure it’s freezing out but that doesn’t mean you need to be in a hairy situation! With vacations and spring just around the corner, hair removal is simple and the results will make you feel warm despite the chill.

DIY

Not quite ready to venture out just yet? Do your own hair removal at home! Pick up Bliss Spa’s Poetic Waxing At-Home Hair Removal Kit ($45, Sephora). This little doozie includes microwavable wax, cleanser, pre- and post-waxing oil, spatulas and complete instructions. Use on your legs, arms or bikini area for smooth skin. Or you can try Veet Suprem Essence Hair Removal Gel Cream ($7, drug stores), which works in 3 minutes so you can get up and go.

Hair Removal Help: Be sure to try the product you use on a small patch of skin first and wait 24 hours. I know it’s a huge pain but you will avoid a world of hurt (literally!) if you are allergic or your skin reacts badly.

Waxing

The idea of hair being ripped out sounds painful but the process is actually quite quick and easy. Waxing lasts for eyebrows to underarms and beyond and creates a smooth, clean look. Head over to Soiree Salon and Spa, where hair can be removed from anywhere (really). They recommend you do not shave two weeks prior to waxing so that the hair can be pulled at the root to ensure long lasting results. Uptown Salon and Spa offers waxing as well, with options including lower belly, full face, brows and Brazilian.

Hair Removal Help: Take aspirin or ibuprofen about a half hour prior to your appointment. It will help if you do experience pain and your spa will usually provide an aftercare lotion or oil to calm the area.

Threading

Threading is a pretty cool technique because of its simplicity: simple sewing thread wielded by talented threaders who pluck hairs out in the twist of the thread. Threading is usually just for brows but can also be done on arms or even bikini areas. Head over to threading mecca Salon Panache for quick service and gorgeous work that lasts.

Hair Removal Help: If your pain threshold is low, take a pain reliever prior to threading. Usually the threader will offer you cooling gel after your appointment..take them up on it!

Permanent

If more permanent hair removal is on your agenda, consider electrolysis or laser hair removal. Associates in Electrology offers both procedures for permanent hair removal for men and women on every part of the body. Electrolysis ranges from $35-$95 depending on how long you need and laser hair removal is priced on an individual basis, based upon thickness of hair, location, etc. Skinsational Med Spa offers Laser Hair Removal on any part of the body, prices range from $540-$3000, depending upon individual needs.

Hair Removal Help: Do your homework and have a consultation to be sure you are comfortable in the setting. Be certain permanent hair removal is for you.
