Monday, May 25, 2015
With over 49 million beneficiaries in the United States as of 2012, Medicare has helped parents and grandparents see a significant cut to their monthly health insurance bills. But as more and more information surfaces about Medicare spending and prescription numbers, so too does this principal question: Does America have a problem overprescribing its patients?
FindtheBest.com's medical data experts at healthgrove.com gathered data from The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), which details statistics on prescription drugs that were prescribed by healthcare providers in 2013 (most recent data available) under the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D). Part D of the Medicare social insurance program subsidizes the cost of prescriptions for people enrolled in Medicare. That year, over 37 million Americans were under this specific plan (about 75% of all people enrolled in Medicare).
HealthGrove then crunched the numbers to see which counties in Massachusetts give out the most Medicare Part D prescriptions per Medicare beneficiaries as a whole.**It's important to note that this stat only accounts for the number of prescriptions giventhrough Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D). The number of beneficiaries is calculated as the total number of people enrolled in Medicare as a whole in that county. See how Massachusetts compares to the rest of the country: Suffolk County is by farthe most prescription-happy area in Massachusetts , with a whopping 36.35 prescriptions per Medicare beneficiary. It's followed by Worcester County, with 22.49 prescriptions per beneficiary.
