Fit for Life: Do What Others Won’t .......

Saturday, November 16, 2019

Matt Espeut

You hear motivational quotes, and see inspiring posts on social media all the time, but what do they really mean?

Another question is, do you apply them to your everyday life, or do you just read them, absorb your hit of feel-good dopamine and go back to your regular daily tasks?

Ya see, I like to take these quotes and dissect them, give them some meaning, then try to program them into my mind and use them for strength and energy towards improvement.

We all know that reading something, or just absorbing information is useless without taking action, because without action words are just words that carry no meaning.

Let me go over a few that I heard recently and give you some of my feedback and interpretation as to what they mean.

Do what others won’t, so you can have the things others don’t.

I heard this on my friend's Facebook live and it really resonated with me because it has a lot of truth to it.

I’m a firm believer that we get what we deserve based on the actions we take.

Many people feel entitled to become successful in all areas of their lives, however very few are willing to put in the work, time and exercise the discipline to achieve the result they are after.

People that are fit put the work in the gym, and in the kitchen.

They schedule workouts into their day, they show up prepared with quality food to eat, and they exert the blood sweat and tears to achieve their desired results.

The last time I looked at statistics, only 15% of the population exercise and take care of their health.

That means that when you go into a gym and it looks packed, there are over 85% of the population NOT there.

So many people have excuses as to why they have poor health.

Genetics, I work too much, I have kids, I'm taking care of a family member, I travel too much and on and on.

The funny thing is that MOST of our members at Providence Fit Body Boot Camp have the same itinerary, but they still manage to get their 30 minutes in.

That’s why they are getting the results and the excuse-makers aren’t.

They are doing what others won’t and they have the good health and fitness levels that the others don’t.

When it comes to monetary success, it takes long hours of hard work, and you need to deal with a lot of problems and adversity on a daily basis. Working a 9-5 job where you can punch a clock and leave your work behind, generally won’t get you the success the person signing the front of the check is capable of.

Working 8 hours a day and giving nothing extra will net you the same result.

However, going above and beyond will.

Even if you don’t own the business, act like you do!!

It’s the ones that arrive before everyone else, and the ones that leave last that are usually the most successful because they are doing the tasks others won’t, and they have the cars, boats and bank accounts that others don’t.

If you are not willing to go the extra mile and do the things that aren’t fun, sexy, and exciting, you can expect to live a life of mediocrity and stay on the level you are currently at.

There is nothing wrong with that if that’s your choice, but don’t complain when someone has it better than you, and don’t turn someone that’s successful into a villain or be envious of them because they did the things you weren’t willing to do.

Early is on time. On-time is late. Late is unacceptable.

We live in an age where it is almost impossible to forget an appointment, or to NOT be on time for something.

We all have alarms and reminders as well as calendars on our phones, so it is super easy to keep your day and appointments organized. Yes, sometimes we forget things, and sometimes there are unusual circumstances, however, if something is important enough to us, we will find a way to arrive on time.

An example of early is on time, means that you shouldn’t be pulling in the parking lot at 1:55 for a 2:00 appointment. You should be sitting in the waiting room at 1:55 for that 2:00 appointment.

This is an area I have been working on for a while, because we all need to respect each other’s time. Being late and keeping someone waiting for you is disrespectful and unacceptable, and I have deep regret when I do it to someone, despite the circumstances.

I have been working with a Navy Seal, and he has instilled this quote in my head because when it comes to structure, execution, and efficiency, no one does it better that a SEAL TEAM member.

My friend’s father just passed away last year at the age of 88 years old and one thing about him that stood out and impressed me was that he wasn’t late for anything in his life.

He was always prepared, and when he was somewhere unfamiliar with his surroundings, he would arrive a day early to scout out his route and plan his time accordingly.

He was a personal training client of mine, and when he was on the calendar, I always knew I wouldn’t be getting a 5-minute break between sessions because he would ALWAYS be there waiting for me.

How you do anything, is how you do everything.

I am current reading a book called Mastery, and in one chapter it states “What might seem like small issues—chronically being late, insufficient attention to detail, not returning favors—are signs of something deeper about their character. These are patterns you must pay attention to. Nothing is too small to notice.”

My business mentor Bedros Keuilian says it best, “If your car is a mess, your apartment is probably a mess, and so is your bank account. If you cut corners at home, you are likely to cut corners at work and in all your personal relationships as well.”

Yes, there are exceptions to the rule, however, we are habitual by nature, and its rare a human will change their characteristics in different environments, so when it does happen, its usually because they are consciously putting on a show, acting phony and not being themselves.

Take my friends dad for example. If you needed to get to the airport on time, wouldn’t he be the guy you would count on over someone that’s always late?

When I am in the hiring process, I look for clues as soon as someone walks in the door.

Have they dressed accordingly? Did they arrive on time? Did they fill out the application accurately and thoroughly? Were they friendly to the staff or anyone else in the building? If the answer is no to one or more of those questions, it’s going to be a short interview because they failed to go above and beyond, and the words “good enough” are probably a big part of their vocabulary.

This is the time we need to be our best and shine the brightest. If you can’t make a good first impression, you are probably NOT going to be a good fit on our team.

Remember, how you do anything is how you do everything.

So, the next time you read a motivational quote, break it down and give it real meaning. In order to enhance the meaning, take action and apply it to your day immediately and always remember “to have what others don’t, you need to do what others won’t”.

Committed to your success,
