5 Great School Vacation Ideas

Saturday, February 19, 2011

If there’s one thing the barrage of snow days has taught parents this winter is that the little ones get cabin fever—and quick. This school vacation, if you’re not off to sunnier shores, here are five great ideas to get out and about around the Ocean State.

URI Eco-Exploration

URI’s Eco-Exploration Program takes children on a trip to the tropics, the desert and the rainforest—all within the confines of the Botanical Center—to learn about environmental science. They will have the chance to feel a coyote’s fur, learn to compost with red wiggler worms, feed a Venus flytrap, and plant seeds in their own greenhouse that they can take home. The two-hour program is offered on Feb. 22 and 24 at 10am and costs $8 per child and $5 per adult.

Yoga Dance Story Time at URI is a program for parents and their children on Friday, Feb. 25 at 10am that uses yoga postures, hand gestures, facial expressions and dance movements to tell a story. Trees, rocks, lions and butterflies will be depicted through yoga postures, roaring sounds, and songs. Taught by certified yoga instructor Shanthi Muthu, the program costs $15 for one parent and child. Space is limited. For more information or to register for the programs, email [email protected] or call (401) 874-2900.

Seal Safari

Join Save The Bay and Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation for seasonal seal watching tours aboard M/V Alletta Morris. Save The Bay provides expert guides and binoculars for an educational view of these seasonal visitors. For dates and rates, click here. After your cruise, head over to Save The Bay's Exploration Center and Aquarium, open Saturdays and Sundays from 10-4. Find out what types of crustaceans we have in Narragansett Bay. What makes the spider crab such a special crustacean? And make a lobster hat at our craft table! In addition to weekends, the Aquarium is open Feb. 21-25 from 10-4 for school vacation.
