Newport’s “Murder Weekend” Getaway

Saturday, September 24, 2011

Do you read murder mysteries and try to put it together ahead of the sleuth? Love the mystery of strangers in a resort hotel and the feeling that anything might happen? Newport's Architect's Inn hosts the weekend of your dreams: a Murder Mystery weekend.

Built in 1873 as the stately home of renowned Newport architect George Champlin Mason, Architect's Inn now functions as a cozy bed-and-breakfast with a bit of Victorian romance no matter what the event. On select weekends, however, Architect's Inn becomes the scene of a faux-crime as Newport Murder Mystery takes over the house for a special whodunit event.

It starts even before you arrive

Before the weekend, Architect's staff mails you an individual character's role based on your personality, interests, comfort level, and "ability to raise one eyebrow at a time." The saga unfolds with a plot from several murder-mystery story lines that may revolve around Civil War–era slayings or botched crimes. As you piece together the clues—all while playing the customized character you've been assigned—you also have access to delicious dining courtesy of local food providers, with dessert on Friday evening, breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, and a three-course dinner with all alcohol included on Saturday night. Now there's a recipe for murder!

During breaks in the mock murder and mayhem, you're free to break character (or stay in character) and explore the local sights or enjoy the amenities offered by their room in the inn, including private baths, Gilchrist & Soames bath products, air conditioning, WiFi, fireplaces, high-thread-count linens, and downy feather pillows.

Weekends in October are still available, under these themes:

- October 14-16: "I Do or I Die"
- October 21-23: Halloween theme (nearly sold out)
- November 11-13: "The Bitter Taste of Newport" - during Newport Restaurant Week
- November 18-20: "All's Fair in Art and Money"
- December 16-18: Holiday theme
- December 23-25: "Hearst's Hollywood"

Want to turn up the drama? Newport Murder Mystery can upgrade you with build-your-own-adventure options. Add a scavenger hunt around and throughout Newport and MIddletown, lunch at a participating restaurant, tour and tasting at Coastal Extreme Brewing Company, tickets to the mansions, or a massage.

Packages are available online, here.
