It's been a busy two weeks at the Ryan Center at the University of Rhode Island. Early last week critically acclaimed mash-up artist Greg Gillis came by to get everyone dancing with his high-energy stage show, complete with lights, video art, toilet-paper guns, and confetti cannons. On Thursday comedian/actor Aziz Ansari, star of NBC's Parks and Recreation, performed stand-up, and his self-deprecating geeky humor and witty social commentary were big hits with the young crowd. And this weekend impressionist, actor, Saturday Night Live alum, and Emmy-winning comedian Dana Carvey will stop by the Kingston arena for URI Family Weekend (but the show is open to the public). A celebrity chef who was scheduled to visit Rhode Island on Monday had to cancel his trip. Globally renowned chef Jacques Pepin was supposed to come to Barrington Books for a special Halloween cookbook-signing, but the store learned on Sunday that he had cancelled all his events in Rhode Island. He was also planning to visit the Newport Mansions Store on Bannister's Wharf in Newport on Sunday to sign books and meet the public. His is currently promoting his new book, Essential Pepin, containing over 700 of his favorite recipes, and although he wasn’t there in person, the Barrington store will have signed and personalized bookplates at a later date for disappointed Pepin fans…
And lastly, save November 22 on your calendar, as local band Deer Tick will once again return home to celebrate Providence’s 375th birthday. Mayor Angel Taveras is throwing a “Hey Providence, It’s Your Birthday!” party at the Providence Performing Arts Center with Deer Tick headlining. Other local bands like The ‘Mericans, Jeffrey Osbourne, and more will also play, plus there will be fun events like a birthday cake competition and food truck face off.
