Rethinking the Afropolitan: Photographs by Hector Mediavilla and Christopher Lopez

Two concurrent exhibitions of photographs will be shown in the conjunction with the Holy Cross Conference Rethinking the Afropolitan: The Ethics of Black Atlantic Masculinities on Display. The exhibition includes photographs from Christopher Lopez’s Visualizing the Music of Ismael Rivera series, images that were taken on location in Puerto Rico and inspired by the music of one of the island’s most beloved musicians of the 20th Century, Ismael Rivera. Photographer Hector Mediavilla’s photographs capture the fascinating world of Congolese men known as Sapeurs, who use dress and performance to engage and counter the realities of political and economic hardship in postcolonial Africa.
