There are an estimated 11 million illegal or unauthorized immigrants in the United States. Unauthorized immigrants make up 3.5% of the U.S. population.

More than 6.5 million illegal immigrants in America are from Mexico, making up 58% of all illegal immigrants. The next four largest amounts of illegal immigrants come from the countries of Guatemala (6%), El Salvador (3%), Honduras (2%) and China (2%).

In New England, there are an estimated 342,000 unauthorized immigrants. In Massachusetts, there 185,000 unauthorized immigrants. The majority of immigrants in Massachusetts are from Brazil with an estimated 36,000 (20%).

The amount of illegal immigrants per state range from 21,000 to more than 3 million.
