Ruth Bader Ginsburg

The fact that Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg was best friends with Judge Antonin Scalia is instructive.

Today’s shrill and angry partisans might pause for a moment’s reflection that these two very smart well-written judges could reach opposite conclusions about controversial legal matters and yet remain best buddies off the bench. They shared a love of opera and travel as well as a love for robust language. You knew you were in for a treat when either one of them began an opinion with the words “I dissent.”

As the father of two accomplished women, I appreciate the pioneering work of the “notorious RBG”!  Here for your consideration are some of her most enduring and endearing quotes:

*Reacting in anger or annoyance will not advance one’s ability to persuade”. Amen to that………..

* Fight for the things that you care about but do it in a way that will lead others to join you”. Sound advice……

* I’m a very strong believer in listening and learning from others”. May your wisdom be embraced…….

* In every good marriage, it helps sometimes to be a little bit deaf”. This one is an absolute gem……how true!

* Women belong in all the places where decisions are being made. It shouldn’t be that women are the exception.” Can I hear an amen?

* Women will have achieved true equality when men share with them the responsibility of bringing up the next generation.” Key words here are “true equality” and “responsibility”. How quaint. How old-fashioned. More importantly, how morally urgent it is to recognize that true equality remains elusive and that true parental responsibility is a shared exercise.

* I would like to be remembered as someone who used whatever talent she had to do her work to the very best of her ability.” Madam Justice, you achieved your goal. And we, the beneficiaries of your tireless efforts, salute your life’s work. Thank you.

You are already greatly missed. Please tell Antonin that he is missed too!.

RIP.

Tom Finneran is the former Speaker of the House of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
