Clark University to Hold Fundraiser to Support Philippines Relief

Friday, November 22, 2013

Check out Clark University's fundraiser to benefit victims of Typhoon Haiyan on Saturday, Nov. 23 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Bassett Visitors Center.

Clark University will host a fundraiser to benefit victims of Typhoon Haiyan on Saturday, Nov. 23 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Bassett Visitors Center, 1 Maywood Street in Worcester.

The event, which was planned by several Clark University student organizations, will feature singing and dance performances, as well as sale of T-shirts, stickers and baked goods. All funds will be donated to the Red Cross to support people affected by the typhoon in the Philippines.

Sponsoring groups at Clark University include the Student Activities Board, Asian Culture Society, ONE Campus Challenge, the International Student Association, and the Latin American Student Organization.

Individuals who cannot attend Saturday's event and wish to make a donation can do so by visiting the Red Red Cross website.

Tradition of Giving Back

The upcoming fundraiser marks Clark University’s second benefit to support Filipino relief. Last week, students from the International Development, Community and Environment (IDCE) Department raised $535 during “The Filipino Spirit is Waterproof” fundraiser. The money was sent to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF.

Typhoon Haiyan

On Nov. 8, Typhoon Haiyan ravaged the eastern and central Philippines, resulting in more than 5,000 people dead or reported missing. Another 4 million have been displaced by the storm, which featured wind gusts up to 235 miles per hour. Typhoon Haiyan is the second-deadliest Philippine typhoon ever recorded. Despite preliminary figures, final fatality and economic loss figures could take months to collect.
