Khrystian King Calls for Worcester Colleges to Assist with After-School Programs

Friday, October 02, 2015

On Thursday, At-Large City Council candidate Khrystian King called on Worcester's colleges and universities to lend a helping hand to the city's children and youth. King, a social worker and community leader, hopes that the city's institutions of higher education utilize their resources to help improve after-school programs and activities in Worcester.

In a letter to college administrators and City Manager Ed Augustus, King wrote, "Research shows what we all know: when we provide kids with safe places to go and structured programs after school, crime rates drop. It’s that simple. Our colleges and universities are uniquely positioned throughout the city with an abundance of facilities, mentors and other resources that would be a huge asset to at-risk kids and teenagers. We need campus administrators to step up to the plate to help our young people succeed – and make neighborhoods safer in the process.”

According to King, with the assistance of the city's colleges, after-school programs at Worcester's public schools could help expand tutoring, arts and other academic opportunities, while at the same time providing a structured and safe environment for students.

“This isn’t about who pays what. It’s about making our neighborhoods safer places to live, work, and raise families,” said King. “Worcester’s colleges and universities have the means to help improve public safety and give local kids a leg up, at little to no cost. This partnership would be a win for the entire community.”
