Late Tuesday night, Worcester Police officers were called to Frederick Street for a report of an assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. What they found was an 18-year-old male who had been shot. The young man died on Wednesday at a hospital due to his injuries.

On Wednesday evening, WPD identified the victim as 18-year-old Samuel Castro of Worcester.

Chief Gary Gemme said, “It is very unfortunate that the trends in gun violence that occurred in 2014 have continued in 2015. An all too familiar pattern continues with roughly 90 percent of the gunshot victims being young men of color and where teenagers now represent six of the twelve gunshot victims. We have seen a continuing increase in the availability of illegal guns and more of a willingness to use them by a small group of violent offenders. The death of Samuel Castro represents another senseless shooting in the city and the tragic death of a teenager.”

No arrests have been made yet in the shooting and WPD detectives are currently investigating. According to the WPD, the crime scene unit was able to recover ballistic evidence at the scene along with other physical evidence.

This is city’s third homicide of 2015.
