Cheat Sheet 17, FBI Files: Patriarca Ties to Brink’s Robbery and Jack Witschi’s Sports Arena

Monday, November 30, 2015

Each week accompanying the segments of the FBI files on Raymond Patriarca and expert analysis on the documents released, GoLocal provides a “cheat sheet” of some of the key elements from the documents.

Make no mistake about it, the files are layered with information about a time where the scope and reach of the Patriarca crime family permeated nearly every aspect of life in New England.

PAGE 16 FBI Try to Insert an Informant in the Inner Circle

For the first time, FBI documents unveil the effort to implant an informant inside Raymond Patriarca’s inner circle working out of the Coin-O-Matic.

“He has been in contact with the subject at this establishment; that subject has appeared friendly to him and that they have had several general conversations but to date, subject has not actually confided in him to the point where he has discussed personal business with the informant.”

The informant was concerned about making a misstep and being detected, “Informant stated he is fearful of asking any direct questions of subject for fear that his relationship would terminate.”

Patriarca “is on edge” over the investigation being conducted.

PAGE 22 Tie to Brink's Robbery

In 1950 the Brink's Headquarters in Boston was robbed of over $1.2 million in cash. The crime for year’s was referred to as the "perfect crime."

It was reported that before John Buccelli’s death, “Later that same Buccelli  returned to the house with NAME REDACTED and Joseph Moffie carrying a duffel bag. They told the NAME REDACTED to leave the bedroom and these three men worked therein for some time repeatedly going into the bath room and flushing the same. Subsequentky she noticed a very moldy odor in the house and determined that the three men were engaged in destroying old money. At the onset she thought it was counterfeit money but later learned REDACTED that it was the “Brink’s robbery loot.”

Read more in the files and read the FBI description of the crime.

PAGE 29 Patriarca Won't Pay Christmas Decorations on Federal Hill

Patriarca is reportedly short of money — he turns down the Federal Hill Merchants’ request for a donation to decorate the Hill. Patriarca is usually a major donor to the annual event, but in 1961 he gave no support.

Authorities found more than $100,000 of Brinks robbery money in the wall at his Kenmore Real Estate Office on Tremont Street in Boston. Buccelli was sentenced to jail at Deer Island. During his jail time, Patriarca paid his family each month.

There are multiple explanations for his murder including NY interest over drugs. According to reports, Patriarca did not attend his funeral.
