Bears Win 2OT Thriller - Harvard Under the Lights Up Next

Sunday, September 19, 2010

With all of the excitement surrounding Brown’s first-ever home game under the lights building, concentrating on the season-opener against Stony Brook wasn’t an easy task for the Bears. Next Saturday’s game against Harvard is all Brown football fans have been talking about this offseason. But, Bears head coach Phil Estes has to keep his team focused on their first opponent – Stony Brook. Estes was able to do that and his Bears escaped in double overtime by beating the Sea Wolves 33-30 at Brown Stadium.

“We persevered today,” said Estes. “We had some turnovers and gave up a few big plays, but overall I liked how we played.”

The Bears had to play the game without first-team All-Ivy QB Kyle Newhall-Caballero who suffered a broken hand in practice a few weeks ago. That left the quarterbacking duties to senior Joe Springer who played a solid game in his first-career start.

Springer completed 23 of his 43 pass attempts for 250 yards. He threw 1 touchdown – a 16-yard strike to Jimmy Saros on third and goal which gave the Bears a 10-7 second quarter lead.

The Brown defense played solid virtually all day with their only two mistakes coming early in the first and second quarters. In both cases, the Bears D allowed 1-play touchdown drives to the Stony Brook offense.
The first came with 12:18 to play in the first quarter when Sea Wolves QB Michael Coulter hit Matt Brevi for a 67-yard touchdown strike that put them on top 7-0.

The second came just after the Saros touchdown when tailback Brock Jackolski ripped off a 47-yard TD run after a nice kick return which gave Stony Brook the ball at the Bears 47. That TD put the Sea Wolves up 14-10 which was the score at the half.

In the third quarter, Stony Brook jumped on top 20-10 on a Miguel Maysonet 16-yard TD run. The Sea Wolves missed the extra point which would prove costly later on.

Then, on the ensuing kickoff, Brown sophomore Mark Kachmer made the play of the game by returning the kickoff 91-yards for a TD to cut the deficit to 20-17.

Brown freshman placekicker Alexander Norocea was perfect in his debut for the Bears. He was 3-3 on point afters and nailed a pair of 30-yard field goals as well. The second FG tied the game at 20 which was the score heading into the first OT.

Brown scored first on a Zach Tronti (77yds 2TD) 4-yard touchdown making it 27-20. The Sea Wolves would answer, however, when Brock Jackolski took it home from 1-yard out tying it at 27 and sending it to a second overtime.

In the second OT, the Bears defense limited Stony Brook to a 36-yard FG attempt which Wes Skeffington nailed putting the Wolves up 30-27.

The Brown offense responded on their possession of the second overtime. Fueled by a pass interference call on Stony Brook in the endzone against Alex tounkara, the Bears Zach Tronti punched it in from 1-yard out sending the crowd at Brown Stadium home happy after a 33-30 double-overtime victory.

Tounkara was the offensive star of the game. The 6’-4” WR was virtually unstoppable hauling in 12 catches for 160 yards.  His performace came in front of his former teammate Buddy Farnham who was in the stands rooting his alma mater on.

Tounkara's stellar performance was matched defensively by senior LB Andrew Serrano who had 12 tackles, a sack and a big interception.

“I thought that Serrano’s interception was huge for us. It stopped what could have been a scoring drive for them,” Estes said. “All in all our defense played well. We’re happy with the win. Now we can look forward to next week’s game against Harvard.”

Portable lights will be imported and set up at Brown Stadium for Saturday’s game which starts at 6pm. Tickets are still available for the game which they are expecting a crowd of about 15,000.
