Pats Cut Farnham / NFL News & Notes

Tuesday, August 10, 2010

What would have made for a great local story came to an end on Monday in Foxboro.  That is where the Patriots released former Brown University standout and Andover, Mass. Native Buddy Farnham.  Farnham was a long shot to make the roster and was cut along with defensive lineman Adrian Grady yesterday.  The cuts were to make room for the signing of two other players – offensive lineman Darnell Stapleton and cornerback DeAngelo Willingham.

For those, like myself, who know Farnham, I wouldn’t count him out.  He is the type of person who just may have the determination and work ethic to take that long and difficult road to the NFL.  Former Brown great Sean Morey withstood getting cut seven different times before carving out a nice career for himself.  We will see if Farham attempts to travel that same path.

-Laurence Maroney says he’s going to run “tough” in 2010.  He claims there will be no “dancing” in the backfield for which he has been criticized during his entire Patriots career.  The oft-injured and sometimes frustrating running back wants us to believe that this year will be different.  Let’s hope so!  Because, for a first round draft choice, the first four seasons of his career have been a tease at best and frustrating at worst.

-Why Bob Kraft and the Patriots are dragging their feet on signing Tom Brady to a contract extension is beyond me.  The fact is that without Brady, no one would consider this a team that has a shot at even making the playoffs.  With question marks galore on the defensive side of the football, no true number one running back and an offensive line that’s getting thinner by the day, Brady is the one player that Pats fans can pin their hopes on for a successful 2010 season.  Kraft can hide behind the uncertain future of a new collective bargaining deal all he wants, but the bottom line is that he can pay Brady what he wants, when he wants and figure the rest of the details out later.

-Aaron Schobel in a Pats uniform makes too much sense to me.  However, Schobel has made it clear that the Houston Texans would be his top choice.

-What a tough blow for Josh McDaniels and Denver.  The NFL’s sack leader in 2009 with 17, Elvis Dumervil will undergo surgery tomorrow to repair a torn pectoral muscle.  It is highly probable that he will miss the entire 2010 season.

-In Miami, Dolphins coach Tony Sporano has handed out t-shirts saying “Feed the Wolf” on them.  Sporano feels like Miami should be hungry following a 7-9 season which saw them miss the playoffs after going 11-5 the previous year and winning the AFC East.

-It wasn’t a good weekend for Colts defensive tackle John Gill.  Gill was arrested for public intoxication Sunday morning after police found him passed out in a ditch.  Gill, however, was released from jail Sunday afternoon and the charges were dropped.  Now the word out of Indy is that he may miss the entire season to undergo treatment for alcoholism.

-The longer this Darelle Revis holdout continues, the better it is for other AFC East teams like New England, Miami and Buffalo.  However, don’t think that the Jets won’t have a strong defense without Revis.  They will!

-You have to love Brian Cushing’s defense for testing positive for high levels of hCG – overtrained athlete syndrome.  Allegedly, an athlete that trains hard for a long period of time and then stops can have a testosterone imbalance creating such a high level of hCG.  Why is it, then, that every other NFL player or professional athlete doesn’t test positive for high levels of hCG?  Are we to believe that Houston’s Cushing is the only pro athlete who trains hard?  I don’t think so.

-Before practicing with the Saints Monday, do you think that Bill Belichick told his team that the Saints just arrived from the White House where they were honored by President Obama for winning the Super Bowl?  He probably asked for a show of hands to see how many in his locker room have actually made that trip.
