Bulldogs find a way in overtime win

Sunday, February 13, 2011

On a record-setting afternoon in Smithfield, the Bryant University men’s basketball team more than made up for Wednesday’s deflating loss.

The Bulldogs set a new school record for points in a Division I game and recorded their first win over Central Connecticut by beating the Blue Devils, 85-80, Saturday in overtime.

The win avenged a tough loss to the Blue Devils just three days earlier in which the Bulldogs fell apart in the second half due to turnovers. Bryant is now 9-17 overall and 7-7 in the Northeast Conference.

The Bulldogs led throughout on Saturday, but the Blue Devils (17-8, 10-4 NEC) clawed back in the closing seconds to force overtime. Central Connecticut led by as many as four in the extra session before Bryant responded. A 3-pointer by Frankie Dobbs cut Central Connecticut’s lead to one and Cecil Gresham put Bryant on top for good with a fadeaway jumper with 58 seconds to go.

Bryant iced it on three free throws by Dobbs in the closing seconds. Gresham led the Bulldogs with 21 points while Alex Francis chipped in with 11 rebounds. Dobbs finished with 19 points and Corey Maynard added 16. Ken Horton led the Blue Devils with 27 points on 11-of-17 shooting.

The Bulldogs will return to action Thursday at home against Quinnipiac. These two teams met on Jan. 13 and Bryant won, 69-61, on the road.
