Patriots Roll Jets 30-14, Gordon Breakout Game, Edelman Leaves Before the Half
Monday, September 23, 2019
However, wide receiver Julian Edelman was injured in the second quarter and did not return to the game.
According to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Edelman suffered a rib injury and the x-rays came back negative. That has not been confirmed by the team.
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick did not have an update on the injury during his post-game press conference.
The Patriots are now 3-0 on the season, while the Jets fall to 0-3.
Gordon Sparks Patriots
The Patriots built a big lead early and the defense was dominating. The Patriots defense is still yet to give up a touchdown on the season. Both Jets scores came off of turnovers by the Pats late in the game.
Following a Gostkowski field goal to make it 23-0, the Patriots would add on when running back Rex Burkhead would take a toss from Tom Brady and run it two yards into the endzone to give the Patriots a 30-0 lead.
The touchdown was set up by a big catch from Gordon on a third and 22 after Brady was called for intentional grounding.
On the play, Gordon leaped up and caught the ball over a defender along the sideline and managed to get both feet down in bounds.
Earlier in the game, Gordon appeared to hurt his hand after engaging in a block with Jets cornerback Trumain Johnson.
Gordon finished the game with six catches for 83 yards.
Jets Get on Board Late
The Jets would get on the board late when New England punt returner Gunner Olszewski fumbled a punt and it was recovered by New York’s Arthur Maulet in the Patriots end zone to make the score 30-7.
In the fourth quarter, Brady was taken out of the game and replaced by Jarrett Stidham.
Stidham threw a pick-six to New York’s safety Jamal Adams to make the score 30-14.
Brady returned to the game on the next offensive possession.
He finished the game completing 28 of 42 passes for 306 yards and two touchdowns.
Patriots Offense Hot Early
Just days after cutting Antonio Brown, the Patriots offense came out red hot.
On New England’s first offensive possession of the game, Sony Michel capped off a nine-play, 88-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run to give the Patriots a 6-0 lead.
Kicker Stephen Gostkowski missed the extra point. It is his third extra point miss in two games.
On New England’s next possession, Brady connected with a wide-open Phillip Dorsett on a 25-yard touchdown pass to give the Patriots a 13-0 lead after Gostkowski’s extra point sailed through the uprights.
The offense would stay hot into the fourth quarter when Brady found Edelman in the end zone to give New England a 20-0 lead after an extra point.
The touchdown pass moved Brady into second all-time for most career touchdown passes behind Peyton Manning.
The Patriots would take that lead into the break.
