Patriots Trim Roster to 53 - Some Big Surprises

Sunday, September 01, 2019

The Patriots cut their roster to 53 players.

The New England Patriots have cut their roster to 53 players.

The Patriots will now have until Sunday, September 1 at 1 p.m. to name a ten-man practice squad.

New England cut the following players:

Linebacker Terez Hall, quarterback Brian Hoyer, as GoLocalProv reported, linebacker Scooby Wright, defensive lineman Nick Thurman, offensive lineman Dan Skipper, linebacker Calvin Munson, tight end Eric Saubert, tight end Stephen Anderson, defensive lineman Uofamba Kamalu, and wide receiver Braxton Berrios.

In addition, the Patriots cut veteran receiver Demaryius Thomas, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

At the start of camp, it was thought that Berrios would have a good opportunity to make the roster as a slot receiver as New England is looking to take pressure off of Julian Edelman.

However, he was not much of a factor in New England’s preseason games, not playing in the third one, and not being targeted in the final one despite playing the majority of the game.

On Friday, New England cut Tyree St. Louis, Cedrick Lang, David Parry, Ryan Davis, A.J. Howard and Andrew Beck, Martez Ivey, Tyler Gauthier, Christian Sam, Damoun Patterson, and Ryan Davis

Patriots Trade Keion Crossen

According to Rapoport, the Patriots have traded cornerback Keion Crossen to the Houston Texans for a sixth-round pick.

The Patriots will now keep Gunner Olszewski on the roster after it was reported that he was cut this morning.

In the Patriots fourth preseason game, Olszewski had one punt return for seven yards and three kick returns totaling 77 yards.

In the game, he also played wide receiver, hauling in two passes for 30 yards and played in the secondary near the end of the game.

Olszewski making the roster likely means that Edelman will no longer have to return punts, saving some of the wear and tear on his body.

Patriots Roster Moves Earlier This Week

Leading up to cut down day the Patriots made numerous roster moves this past week, as GoLocalProv reported.

On Wednesday, New England acquired offensive lineman Korey Cunningham from Arizona, and offensive lineman Jermaine Eluemunor from Baltimore.

On Friday, New England traded cornerback Duke Dawson to Denver and acquired Russell Bodine from Buffalo.
