Scott Cordischi On Sports: URI Over PC, Jeter Out Of His Mind!

Wednesday, December 01, 2010

I have seen them both twice. I saw each once live and in person and watched each once on television. After that small sampling, I’ll take URI to beat PC Saturday at the Dunk.

Granted I haven’t seen a lot of either team thus far, but from what I have seen, the Rams clearly rate the edge. Let’s start with the fact that Delroy James is the best player on either team. The 6’-8” senior forward is an athletic scorer who can slash to the basket and knock down the perimeter jumper. He will be a challenge for the Friars defensively.

Not that Marshon Brooks, Vincent Council and freshman Gerard Coleman should be taken lightly. All are talented but the feeling here is that URI has the better team and, in my opinion, is better coached.

This isn’t a slight on Keno Davis as much as it is a sign of respect for Jim Baron. I think we take for granted what a great job Baron has done building a solid program down in Kingston. While there have been no NCAA appearances in his 9+ years at Rhody, he has built a program that now maintains itself at a very high level of competitiveness. Great players graduate and there is no drop off because others are there to step in and step up.

Baron’s program is better equipped to win this game on Saturday because they are on rock solid ground. Providence College is down and trying to build a program that can enjoy the type of consistency URI has had over the past few years.

Even though it’s PC’s home game, the edge goes to URI.

-Speaking of the Friars, it is very sad to see the atmosphere (or lack thereof) at the Dunk these days. The confluence of the program experiencing some lean years and a lean economy has added up to a lot of empty seats at Friars home games. However, make no mistake about it, PC is this state’s “pro” team. If and when they start winning again, the fans will come and the Dunk will be rocking again.

-Couldn’t Providence move the start time of Monday’s game against Brown up to 6pm so fans can get home for the start of that huge Monday Night Football game between the Patriots and the Jets?

-If there’s a God in heaven (and if he’s a Patriots fan), New England blows out the loud-mouth Jets Monday night.

-The way the Red Sox seem to be pinching their pennies in regard to their own free agents, it makes you think that Theo & Co. may have their sights set on something big this off season. Adrian Gonzalez, perhaps?

-What LeBron James is doing to his head coach Eric Spoelstra in Miami is disgraceful!

-And Dwayne Wade’s silence makes him to Spoelstra the equivalent of Brutus to Ceasar.

-I am shocked that NFL dictator Roger Goodell didn’t suspend Andre Johnson and Cortland Finnegan for their on the field fight last Sunday.

-Am I the only one who can’t wait to see the treatment LeBron James receives when he returns to Cleveland tomorrow night?

-Why should the NY Yankees be upset if the Texas Rangers talked to Andy Pettitte this offseason? Isn’t Pettitte a free agent just like the Rangers’ Cliff Lee whom the Yankees are courting?

-If Derek Jeter really is looking for a 5 or 6 year contract worth about 23 million dollars per season then my opinion of him being the ultimate team-first type of player all of these years was dead wrong!

-Rex Ryan and Bill Belichick’s approach to coaching and dealing with the media could not be more diametrically opposite than they really are. However, make no mistake about it, neither approach would fly well with the general public if they weren’t winning football games.
