Nativity School of Worcester Launches First Ever Fundraising Campaign

Saturday, January 10, 2015

For the first time in its 12 year history, the Nativity School of Worcester will launch a fundraising campaign with the announcement of a $10.5 million effort. Nativity, the city’s only private and tuition-free middle school for boys, will be asking the public for the majority of the donations, as its students come from low-income backgrounds.

“This is an incredibly significant point in the history of this school,” said Alex Zequeira, President of Nativity School. “We are entering a new mindset for our entire organization where we are no longer just looking to survive, but also to thrive. This fundraising effort is about capitalizing on an extraordinary opportunity to improve our community by investing in the lives and futures of our most at-risk youth.  It’s about empowering our students from Worcester’s most distressed neighborhoods, letting them know that they matter, that we have dedicated faculty that will change the trajectory of their lives and give them the opportunity to find better lives through a quality education."

Nearly 90 percent of Nativity Worcester graduates are enrolled in either high school or college.  In May 2014, four of Nativity Worcester’s first graduates received their college degrees from Providence College and two are currently working at the school as teachers.

To date, the campaign has more than $4.6 million in commitments. The public funding will go to retiring existing debt and to renovations at properties owned by the school. Funds will also be used to establish an endowment to help sustain the future of the school. At the same time, Nativity will continue to raise the $1 million per year it needs to operate.

“This is a new day for Nativity School of Worcester. There is a strong sense of mission and purpose across the Nativity Worcester community. And within that community there is a shared commitment to tell our unique story, to solidify our roots in the City of Worcester and our own future. With the generous support of our loyal donors and from people who may just be hearing about us for the very first time, we will secure the dream envisioned by our founders,” said J. Christopher Collins, chairman of the Board of Trustees of Nativity Worcester.
