Making a splashy debut in this year's Best in the World List: Newport's Vanderbilt Grace

Four Rhode Island resorts and hotels have made their mark on the world, as Conde Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice Awards has revealed in its annual highly anticipated winners list, called, boldly enough, "The Best in the World."

Sifted, as the magazine's editors say, from more than 8 million votes cast, this list forms "travel's apex of excellence." The awards reflect the combined opinions of 28,876 Conde Nast Traveler readers who took time to rate the cities, islands, and hotels they visited in the last year, as well as the airlines and cruise ships they traveled with.

Chosen by "the world's most discerning travelers"

"The demand for excellence in travel has never been higher," said Traveler editor-in-chief Klara Glowczewska, "and the results of the 2011 Readers' Choice Awards reflect the most exacting standards by the world's most discerning travelers--the readers of Conde Nast Traveler."

When voting, readers assess places based on relevant criteria, and from that data a final all-around score is tallied for each property, from 1 to 100. Rhode Island placed four properties in the overall listings this year, three of which are located in Newport. Here are the winning properties.

US Small Hotels

The highest ranking this year goes to the elegant Chanler at Cliff Walk, Newport, placing at #12 among US Small Hotels, with an overall score of 92.0.

Following at #31 among US Small Hotels, the equally elegant Castle Hill Inn, also of Newport, takes honors with a score of 86.0

Resorts

The gracious Ocean House of Watch Hill stands tall with legendary US properties on the Traveler Resorts list, placing #50 with a score of 88.6.

US Hotels

The Vanderbilt Grace in Newport made a splash in 2011 in the highly competitive US Hotels category, at #150. "Formerly the Vanderbilt Hall hotel," wrote Conde Nast editors citing the newcomer, "Newport's 33-room Vanderbilt Grace debuts on Readers' Choice this year, after opening in April as the first US property from Grace Hotels."

The Best in the World, Traveler's Readers' Choice Awards, will appear in the November 2011 issue, which goes on sale October 18. For the entire list, go here.
