#60 to #1: Worcester County Cities and Towns with Largest Household Income Gaps

The number of households in Worcester County that earn more than $100,000 is almost three times more than the number of households living below the poverty level. According to data from the 2013 U.S. Census, nearly 90,000 households make over $100k. Roughly 30,000 households earn less than $15,510 - the poverty line for households with two people.

Thirty-six percent of households in Worcester County earn more than $100,000, while just over 7% earn below the poverty level. Between Worcester County's nearly 300,000 homes, the average household income in the area is $78,464.

The highest average household incomes in the county belong to Bolton ($146,029) and Southborough ($143,581). The towns with the lowest average in the county are Southbridge ($42,471) and Warren ($42,478)

In Worcester, nearly the same amount of households (roughly 12,300) earn over $100k and less than $15k with an average household income of $45,932.

The below slides list the most financially unequal cities and towns in Worcester County, in order of least to most unequal. For each community, the percent of residents with household incomes at the very bottom and the very top of the income scale are listed. In addition, the median household income, which is the amount made by those in the middle, and the percent of those at the median are also provided for each community. The degree of inequality is measured by comparing the combined percent of those at the top and bottom with the percent of those in the middle. If the total percent of those at the top and bottom exceeds that for the middle, the community is has greater financial inequality than the one where most income earners are in the middle. Higher scores indicate greater financial inequality. Lower scores indicate less.
