House of 3 Dead Infants is Two Doors Down from Police Station
Saturday, September 13, 2014
According to a Google Maps search, the home –located at 23 St. Paul Rd. – is 200 ft, about a one-minute walk, from the Blackstone Police station.
“This has been a trying, difficult week for our investigators and for the residents of Blackstone,” said Blackstone Police Chief Ross Atstupenas of the incident. “This is not the kind of thing anyone would expect in our community or in any other place for that matter. I want to thank everyone for their patience and cooperation as this investigation has unfolded. Our priorities are to ensure that the four children are safe and to make sure justice is served going forward.”
Interestingly enough, the Blackstone Police Station is labeled a “Baby Safe Haven,” a place where children seven days or younger can be left without fear of criminal prosecution.
Community Outrage
This case has sent shockwaves throughout the local community, as many would have never thought in their wildest dreams that a case so horrible could happen in Blackstone.
While not willing to comment on how close the house is to the police station and potential neglect on behalf of the police, at least one Blackstone selectman is both horrified and saddened by the events that have taken place in his town.
Not Guilty Plea
In connection to the crimes – in addition to the remains of three infants being found, the suspect had four children ages 6 months to 13 that are now in custody of the state – Blackstone Police arrested Erika Murray on a variety of charges stemming from the horrible conditions of her home and the infant remains that were found.
Murray was arraigned in court on Friday September 12th, where she pleaded not guilty and was held without bail.
“Erika Murray, 31, was arraigned in Uxbridge District Court on charges of intimidation of a witness; two counts of permitting substantial injury to a child; concealing an out of wedlock fetal death; cruelty to an animal and violating an abuse prevention order,” said Tim Connolly of the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office. “Not guilty pleas were entered on her behalf by Judge Gerald Lemire and Murray was held without bail. The case was continued to Oct. 14 for a pre-trial conference.”
