MEMA Sends Snow Removal Equipment to Worcester

Friday, January 30, 2015

At the request of Lt. Governor Karyn Polito and the city of Worcester, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has sent 24 pieces of large equipment to Worcester to help with snow removal.

MEMA Director Kurt Schwartz has committed five front end loaders and 19 dump trucks to Worcester.

“MEMA, Gov. Baker and Lt. Gov. Polito have really stepped up to help Worcester with vital resources, as we continue to dig out from the largest snow storm in the city’s history. I want to thank them, and all the crews still working to make the streets and sidewalks safe for our residents," said City Manager Ed Augustus.

Lt. Gov. Polito, who is from Shrewsbury, was in Worcester on Wednesday thanking DPW workers and said she would do whatever she can to help the city's cleanup.

Augustus also thanked Congressman Jim McGovern for his support of Worcester's request for snow removal help. “This is a great example of local, state, and federal partners working together to get the job done for the residents of Worcester,” Augustus said.

The equipment will be used to help clear out some of the large snow piles and snow banks around the city. These piles make it difficult for Worcester drivers and pedestrians. The first piece of equipment arrived early on Friday morning and is being used in the areas of Lincoln Square, Belmont Street, and Burncoat Street.

Through social media, the city of Worcester alerted its residents with this message "If possible, please avoid the Lincoln Square area, due to snow removal."
