NEW: Local Employers Recognized For Hiring Young Workers

Tuesday, June 05, 2012

Three local employers, including one from Worcester, are the inaugural winners of the Growing & Readying Our Workforce (GROW) awards.

At a ceremony at Worcester-based Polar Beverages on Tuesday, awards were given to the Holy Trinity Nursing & Rehab Center of Worcester, Imperial Distributors of Auburn and Lampin Corporation of Uxbridge. They were among approximately 12 nominees for an award that recognizes local employers and their efforts to provide job opportunities for youths.

The GROW Awards were created this year through the Job1 Youth Employment Coalition, an initiative of the Central Massachusetts Workforce Investment Board (CMWIB), to highlight employers going above and beyond to provide workplace experience for local youth.

"We are seeing record high unemployment rates for youth,” Jeff Turgeon, executive director of the CMWIB, said at the event. “However, it is encouraging to see a number of local businesses recognizing the opportunity to shape their future applicant pool by investing in youth.”

The CMWIB helped to establish the Job1 Youth Employment Coalition, a partnership of area schools, higher education and youth employment programs, to establish and promote a connection between employers and youth.

Also speaking at the event was Chris Crowley, executive vice president and treasurer of Polar Beverages, who agreed to host the event because of the organization’s strong support of youth development. Crowley asked other employers to step up to the plate to prepare youth for the workplace, saying, “There are many ways to get involved, including offering internships, job shadowing opportunities, facility tours, and of course jobs.”

John O’Brien, president and CEO of UMass Memorial Health Care, was also honored at the event for his long-term commitment to youth employment. UMass Memorial Health Care provides hundreds of youth each year with an opportunity to gain real life work experience in the Central Massachusetts region.
