NEW: Patriots Trade Chandler Jones to Arizona for Jonathan Cooper, Draft Pick

Tuesday, March 15, 2016

Chandler Jones

The New England Patriots have traded defensive end Chandler Jones to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for guard Jonathan Cooper as well as a second round draft pick, according to reports.

Jones said a goodbye to New England via his twitter account.

Chandler Jones

Chandler Jones was drafted by the Patriots in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft and has recorded 36 sacks in 55 career games with New England.

In 2015, Jones registered 12.5 sacks on the season, a career high.

He was set to make $7.79 million this upcoming season as part of a 5th year option on his rookie contract, which expired after the 2016 season.

In January of 2016, Jones was hospitalized after showing up to the Foxborough Police station for a medical emergency. It was further reported that Jones had a bad reaction to synthetic marijuana.

Jones was not disciplined for the situation.

Filling the Void

With Jones gone, New England will rely on Jabaal Sheard, Rob Ninkovich as well as 2015 draft picks Geneo Grissom and Trey Flowers.

According to reports, the Patriots also hosted free agent Chris Long on Monday.

Jonathan Cooper

Cooper was a first round pick in 2013 but broke his leg in the third preseason game of his rookie season.

Upon his return, Cooper lost a starting job at left guard in 2014 and was moved to right guard in 2015, where he lost that job as well.

The Patriots offensive line struggled this season and in the AFC Championship game allowed quarterback Tom Brady to be hit 23 times en route to a loss to the Denver Broncos.
