Pioneers too much for Bryant

Sunday, February 20, 2011

Cecil Greshman’s big afternoon wasn’t enough to keep the Pioneers from stealing the show.

Sacred Heart broke open a close game down the stretch with two critical plays and held on for an 83-77 win Saturday over Bryant University in the Bulldogs’ home finale.

Greshman finished with a season-high 29 points, but Sacred Heart converted back-to-back three-point plays with 1:11 remaining to turn a 70-69 deficit into a 75-70 lead. The Bulldogs closed to within two on a long three by Greshman before the Pioneers iced the game from the free-throw line.

The Pioneers snapped their five-game losing streak and improved to 10-17 overall and 5-11 in the Northeast Conference while Bryant dropped to 9-18 overall and 7-9 in conference play. Gresham shot 11-of-17, including 5-of-8 from three-point range.

Sacred Heart closed the game on a 14-7 run. Shane Gibson led the Pioneers with 24 points while Louis Montes added 19.

Bryant will close out its season on the road beginning Thursday at Long Island and finishing Saturday at Saint Francis.
