REPORT: Belichick’s Attempt to Trade Brady to 49ers in 2017 Led to QB’s Departure

Friday, March 20, 2020

Bill Belichick reportedly offered Tom Brady to the 49ers

Former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is set to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the 2020 season after spending 20 seasons and winning six Super Bowls with the Patriots.

According to Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller, Brady’s desire to leave New England started in 2017 after learning that head coach Bill Belichick tried to trade him to San Francisco.

According to Miller, the 49ers originally called about back-up quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo at the trade deadline that season, but Belichick offered Brady instead.

Miller writes, “[Robert] Kraft shut that s--t down fast, says a source close to Belichick. So, instead, Lynch gets Garoppolo, but Brady, Belichick, and Kraft haven't been the same since. Tom learned that Bill was ready to get rid of him. And that lit a fire under his ass."

Brady led the Patriots to the Super Bowl that season, where they lost to the Philadelphia Eagles, despite Brady throwing for over 500 yards in the game.

New England got back to the Super Bowl the following season, where they grinded out a win over the Los Angeles Rams.

Following that season, Brady structured his contract so that New England could not franchise him at the end this past season, which saw New England lose to Tennessee in the first round of playoffs.

As has been reported, Brady and the Patriots did not make much of an effort to discuss a contract leading up to free agency.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Brady went over Kraft’s house on Monday night to tell him that he was leaving.

It has also been reported that Brady called Belichick and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to let them know he was leaving.

Brady With Patriots

In 19 seasons with the Patriots, Brady played in 285 games and threw for 74,571 yards and 541 touchdowns.

He led the Patriots to six Super Bowl titles and nine Super Bowl appearances.

Last season, Brady threw for 4,057 yards and 24 touchdowns, but also had eight interceptions. Helping the Patriots to a 12-4 overall record.

The Patriots lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Tennessee Titans.
