Austin, a neatly dressed screenwriter, house-sits for his mother in southern California while working on a screenplay. His brother, Lee, a scruffy drunk, arrives to the house and pesters Austin. Lee is not there for house-sitting, however, but for stealing. Lee's only interest at first is to rob the houses in his mother's neighborhood of household appliances. Though Austin protests, there is not much he can do to stop his brother. Austin simply requests that Lee be out of the house when a movie producer comes to visit later in the day. Typical of a Shepard plot, what unfolds is hilarious and beyond comprehension.

Strong storytelling is the most important and commonly overlooked ingredient in making a successful comic strip or full-length graphic novel. When it comes to deciding how to begin planning a page, or figuring what combination of words and images should go where, aspiring comic artists find themselves hashing things out on their own, often "making it up as they go." While this trial and error method can be fun for a time, it also has the potential for some frustrating results. In this workshop, students will be introduced to storytelling techniques as they apply to the comics medium. With these helpful exercises, guidance, and a little practice, students will achieve a better understanding of how to give their comics and the stories they tell the most impact.

AIA Lecture: How Castles Work

6:00 PM-7:00 PM

Worcester Art Museum

Conference Room

55 Salisbury Street

Worcester, MA 01609

Swipe for WOO Points!

The last 20 years have seen an upheaval in castle studies. Traditionally, castles have been seen as primarily military structures, and their development interpreted in terms of attack and defense. More recently, scholars have developed an alternative view, stressing the castles social and symbolic role. Debate between these views has often been quite heated, reverting to an either/or view that is unhelpful. In this talk, lecturer Dr. Matthew Johnson (professor of Anthropology, Northwestern University) will focus neither on defense nor on symbolism, but on how castles work. Castles are a place of work, and they do work in different ways  they control the flow of things, of animals, and of humans around the landscape. This new view of castles, then, is focused on practice and political economy. Dr. Johnson will give examples from his own research on castles in south-east England, particularly Bodiam, to illustrate his points. Free.
