Before there were cameras and computers, drawing and painting were an integral part of science education. This “ancient” way of learning is slowly being revived with great success. Through the use of discussions, discovery, writing, research, and art we will explore, plant anatomy, insect pollinators, and the art of botanical illustration. Students will come away with an understanding of the scientific process of discovery while honing their writing, comprehension, and art skills. This is a 5 week series of classes. Cost: $60 Child members, $72 Child nonmembers

The Worcester County Horticultural Society held a special meeting on January 27, 1910 to introduce an orchid named for Thayer Estate gardener Edward Orpet. The orchid was exhibited by George McWilliams of Whitinsville and WCHS Secretary Adin A Hixon extended an invitation to other estate gardeners throughout the county to attend and honor a fellow gardener. We'll provide background information from our archives on this interesting group of participants, (particularly John Coulson, William Anderson and Edward Orpet) where they gardened and the plants they grew.
