A Kennedy Loses in Massachusetts - Ed Markey Tops Joe Kennedy in U.S. Senate Primary

Wednesday, September 02, 2020

Markey beats Kennedy handily in Democratic Senate primary

What was thought to be unthinkable, a Kennedy has lost an election in Massachusetts.

U.S. Senator Ed Markey handily defeated U.S. Congressman Joe Kennedy in the Democratic primary 55% to 45%.

The campaign which was supposed to pit the new verses old ended up being dwarfed by the coronavirus and the death and protests tied to George Floyd.

Kennedy in defeat tweeted, “To everyone who fought with us.  Everyone who stood with us. Everyone who believed in us and gave their sweat and tears and hearts and souls to this fight:

Thank you. I am so proud of what we built together. I’d do it with you all again in a heartbeat.”

Markey avoided being tagged as out of touch by gaining the endorsement of progressive superstar New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Kennedy received the endorsement of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

One Kennedy Race Remains

Amy Kennedy, the wife of former Rhode Island Congressman Patrick Kennedy, is in the midst of a competitive race against former Democrat Rep. Jeff Van Drew in New Jersey for the House of Representatives.

Kennedy will face Van Drew, who was elected as a Democrat in 2018, voted against impeaching President Trump, then switched parties.
