Senator Warren Meets with Obama’s Supreme Court Nominee Merrick Garland

Friday, April 15, 2016

United States Senator Elizabeth Warren released the following statement today after meeting in her office with President Obama's nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court, Chief Judge Merrick Garland:

"Today, I was pleased to meet with Chief Judge Merrick Garland, President Obama's nominee to serve on the United States Supreme Court.  For decades, Chief Judge Garland has served his country with distinction - as a federal prosecutor, a senior official at the Department of Justice, and a judge on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals.  He is an impressive candidate, and he has been praised by both Democratic and Republican senators for years.  His nomination deserves the serious consideration our Constitution requires.

"The confirmation of a Supreme Court Justice is one of the most solemn tasks that our government performs. Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution says that the President nominates Supreme Court justices with the advice and consent of the Senate. The President has done his job by nominating Chief Judge Garland. Now it's time for Republicans to do their job by holding public hearings on the President's nominee, considering his nomination in good faith, and giving Chief Judge Garland an up-or-down vote."
