Monfredo: Bowling is Alive and Well at South High, Team Finishes Strong

Saturday, March 21, 2015

South High bowling team

One of the most popular clubs in Worcester County has been the bowling clubs at many of the area schools.  Since 2008 South High has been a member of the  Worcester County United States Bowling Congress  and each Wednesday and Friday the students meet with Coach Jean McNerney, Coach Kayla Avellino and Coach Jamie Penny Burden at the Auburn Ten Pin bowling alley on Southbridge Street in Worcester.

Other  Worcester County schools within the league  include North High, Worcester Technical High School,  Holy Name, Grafton High, Saint Mary’s, Shepard Hill, Auburn,  Assabet Tech, and Baypath.

The student club members  from South High  love the opportunity to bowl and look forward to competing each week. The group has four competing teams and as the coaches stated the team enjoys the sport and it has continued to show true sportsmanship at all events. As in any sport bowling serves as an outlet for the students and a chance to interact with other students and have fun.

Even though the status of bowling is of a club category the teams and coaches in the league are working to make the Bowling Club a recognized MIAA (Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association) sport.  According the coaches, they hope to be recognized as an MIAA sport in the coming years.

As for the season, South High Bowling Team finished in the top two places across every division in the Worcester County High School Bowling League.  The A Team finished second, B Team finished first, C-1 Team finished second and the C-2 team finished second.  The South High Bowling Team competed in the State Championships in Chicopee, Massachusetts  and did very well.

Senior Alex Jandrow finished 11th, Senior Kevin Pham finished 21st and Junior Danielian finished 14th in the individual state competition.  All the coaches at South High praised the team’s competitiveness, their love of the sport and their good sportsmanship throughout the season.

According the  coaches,  in the past seven years South High has always finished in the top first or second places in the Worcester County High School League that hosts eleven Worcester County Schools.  It’s a great activity and it’s nice that it does exist for these schools for not everyone wants to play a major sport in school.  Bowling is a sport that one can participate in their early years and as an adult.   Hopefully,  everyone will support the schools  efforts and look to make bowling  a recognized sport in the future.
