The LOOK: Reviving Your Summer Hair

Saturday, July 20, 2013

Is the heat wreaking havoc on your hair? Follow these tips to stop it in its tracks.

He was the lead hair stylist on Sex and the City 2, he made Anne Hathaway fabulous on film, and now he's GoLocalWorcester's style expert. Frank Barbosa, the Newport-based celebrity stylist, brings red carpet perspective to hair, makeup, and overall style.

With the past two weeks of heat waves, we are also experiencing beauty woes. Here's why: Not only is the summer sun doing a number on your hair, but the sudden changes to cold and dehumidified air-conditioning is also taking its toll. What's a summer girl to do? Here are 3 ways to keep your tresses healthy as summer peaks:

1. Hide it

When it comes to hair, hide it under a hat or scarf in the direct sunlight especially anyone with color. Sun will bleach those tresses right to orange, no matter what color you have in it!

2. Revive it

Protect your hair by reviving it once dry with natural oils. A little goes a long way, so use sparingly! My faves are almond, avocado, and coconut oils.

3. Don't forget your skin

Your skin needs as much (or more) TLC in the summer than your hair. Tend to it moisturizer, but skip the heavy fragrant ones–they tend to have more alcohol in them, which will only add to dryness.

4. Drink

Not cocktails, dears (well, perhaps a few). We're talking water, and it will literally make you glow.

From Sex and the City 2 to Rachel Getting Married, from The Sorcerer's Apprentice to Bride Wars, Frank Barbosa has styled some of the biggest celebrities in film, TV, and theater. He's styled on location alongside film stylist Alan D'Angerio on the film, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, starring Jennifer Garner. He's been in the industry for 17 years, moving from hip neighborhoods in Chicago, to Boston's Newbury St, to Bellevue Avenue in Newport. He maintains that his real passion, though, is being behind a salon chair at Frank Antonio Hair and Makeup in Newport.
