Worcester Police Arrest 4 Men After Store Clerk is Assaulted

Wednesday, April 20, 2016

Worcester Police have arrested four men on Sunday for assaulting a store clerk and firing a gun into the air.

Police arrested Melvin Nooks Jr, 25, of 14 Shelly Avenue, Fitchburg and charged him with assault and battery, witness intimidation, improper storage of a large capacity firearm, defacing property of another, possessions of a large capacity weapon and feeding device, possession of a firearm and ammunition without an FID Card, discharging a firearm within 500 ft. of a building and carrying a loaded firearm without a license.

They also arrested Melvin Nooks, Sr., 52, of 14 Shelly Avenue, Fitchburg along with Andre Mitchell, 26, of 166 Rollstone Street, Fitchburg and Ramond Nieves, 40, of Leominster, Ma, and charged them each with Improper storage of a large capacity firearm, possession of a large capacity weapon and feeding device, possession of a firearm and ammunition without an FID Card, discharging a firearm within 500 ft. of a building and carrying a loaded firearm without a license.

The Incident

Worcester Police responded to ShotSpotter activation in the area of Mill Street extension on Sunday at approximately 2:18 a.m. While officers were on the way, dispatchers received a "hold up alarm" from the Mobil Gas Station located at 10 Mill Street. Upon the officers arrival they met with the Mobil clerk working in the store.

The clerk stated that a male customer entered the store, approached the clerk began to yell profanities at him. The clerk asked the male why he was speaking to him in such manner which further irritated the customer. At this time, the customer walked behind the counter and grabbed the clerk.

The customer started to push the clerk causing several display items to be knocked over. During the assault three of the customer's friends entered the store and told the suspect to leave. While walking out, the suspect turned and threatened the clerk that he would find his family and hurt them.

The four men were seen entering a blue BMW. The suspect entered the front passenger/seat. As the vehicle drove out of the parking lot the clerk observed gunshots fired into the air. The shots came from the passenger side.

Officers at the scene broadcasted the license plate and warned all surrounding communities to be on the lookout for the BMW.

The Arrests

Not long after the broadcast, members of the Massachusetts State Police spotted the vehicle traveling northbound on route 190. The vehicle was stopped. The victim was transported to the scene of the stop and identified the passenger as the man that had attacked him. The suspect was identified as Melvin Nooks, Jr.

A gun was discovered inside the vehicle by the State Troopers. None of the males within the BMW had a license to carry. The weapon was a Springfield Armory .40 cal. semi-automatic handgun with a 12 round magazine clip. The clip was empty.

All four men were arrested and arraigned at the Worcester County District Courthouse.
