Worcester Police Remind Drivers, Pedestrians to Use Extra Caution Over Thanksgiving Holiday

Thursday, November 28, 2019

The Worcester Police Department is reminding motorists and pedestrians to pay extra attention to the roadways over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

“We can’t stress enough how important it is for both drivers and pedestrians to constantly be aware of their surroundings. Even with all the investments we’ve recently made in traffic safety, the best strategy we can promote is for all residents to remain alert while driving or walking,” said City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr.

According to the Worcester Police Department’s Crime Analysis Unit the majority of pedestrian accidents occur between October and December.

In addition, pedestrian accidents peak between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. with the highest frequency occurring on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. In 2018, there were 288 pedestrian accidents called in with two fatalities.

Worcester Police offer the following tips:

For Drivers:

-Obey the speed limit

-Do not driver under the influence

-Be attentive

-Eliminate distractions by putting down the phone

-Yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk

-Do not improperly pass a car which is stopped to yield to a pedestrian

-Be mindful of pedestrians when pulling into and out of driveways

For Pedestrians:

-Use the crosswalks

-Do not walk and text

-Avoid suddenly entering the roadway

-Wear bright/light colored clothing

-Walk in safe places. Stand clear of buses, parked cars and other obstacles so drivers can see you

-Do not cross against a “don’t walk” signal and at mid-block (jaywalking)

-Stay on the sidewalk whenever possible

-Don’t wear headphones

-Do not walk where pedestrians are prohibited
